4. A real test for Newcastle

The upshot of Porto’s love of ceremony was that it felt like this was a match that mattered.

Newcastle’s XI was in keeping with the occasion. Kenedy was missing on compassionate grounds after the birth of his child, and summer signings Ki and Fabian Schar were both on the bench, but it could be that they are when Tottenham Hotspur visit St James’ Park in a fortnight’s time.

Certainly Porto’s players were up for it – how could they dare not be with that fanatacism behind them? - and Vincent Aboubakar was a constant threat to the Newcastle centre-backs. He was less threatening, though, to Martin Dubravka, missing the target from a couple of good chances.

Newcastle were wasteful on the ball, and Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett both controlled the ball out of play in the first half. The commitment was there, as shown by Jamaal Lascelles throwing himself in the way of Yacine Brahimi’s effort to keep Dubravka’s gloves pristine, but there is a lot of sharpening-up to be done in the next fortnight.

In a post-World Cup season, though, it would be a surprise if every team was where they wanted to be come the day of the big kick-off.

They will be pleased to have got away with a 0-0 draw , though Martin Dubravka and the frame of the goal, which Porto hit twice, had a lot to do with that.

5. Not quite the Entertainers

Newcastle gave a debut to their retro Entertainers-style away kit in a game where Porto bizarrely changed from stripes to all blue at half-time.

They might have looked like Kevin Keegan’s great side, but they certainly did not play like them.

Porto’s dominance of the game was too strong for any swashbuckling football.

The ball did not stick up front and too often Newcastle gave the ball away before it got that far.

That said, Callum Roberts, at last allowed to play in his favoured left-wing position rather than filling in at full-back, might have scored late on but he was stretching to the cross from Jamie Sterry - a genuine right-back - and was unable to direct his shot on target.

0-0 is more of a Benitez scoreline than a Keegan one, and this team certainly bears the Spaniard’s hallmark more clearly than his great predecessors.
